It is separated from the Peloponnese by strip narrow of sea. On the island there is one main town, known as “Hydra port”. It consists of a crescent-shaped harbor, which is centered a strand of restaurants, shops, markets, and galleries that cater to tourists and locals (Hydriots). Steep stone streets lead up and outwards from the harbor area. Most of the local residences, as well as the hostelries on the island are located on these streets.

In the year 2009 I have visited this beautiful island together with my friends from Serbian Choir Unity from Kotor. These are some of the photos I made during the visit.

Acknowledgments:
To all Hydriots and specially to father Giorgos Vlachopulos

Time has stopped on them: it is only filled by the ancient city. Still, even through they are set in time, they are not imprisoned in it. Just as he can display the general and unsaid, the individual and universal, Kordić succeeds in representing that which has passed as timeless. The “emblematic” structure also helps: at the top of each photo, there is sentence which does not explain the photo, but the idea which it represents. This kind of mental riddle does not encumber the precision and purity of frames. The sentence does not represent narration, but the thoughtful completion of the visual structure…

Saša Brajović
From the text of the Catalogue of the Exhibition

Acknowledgments:
Nada & Antun Sbutega,
Tihana Ćulafić &
Saša Brajović

General Sponsor:
Vojin Lazarević

The intention was to create a visual history of the facility on the eve of its redevelopment as a superyacht marina. I approached this assignment with mixed feelings. On the one hand, all inhabitants of the Bay of Kotor have had something to do with Arsenal over the years. I remember, when I was kid, waiting at the dock of Strp for Barbara, the ferry that took workers to the site and brought them home again each day. I also remember my uncle’s submarine voyages: his leaving Arsenal after a refit and then my waiting for him to come back. On the other hand, abandoned docks, industrial warehouses and largely derelict ships where not, until then, of photographic interest to me. Finally, after six months of work, and from mountains of material, I selected some 494 photos that represent all aspects of this historic site. As I was sorting through them, it occurred to me that it would be nice to show them publicly somehow. I delivered the photographs and soon after traveled to Rome. As I was walking around the Aventine hill, I received a message from Porto Montenegro: “We have seen the photographs and we would like to mount an exhibition.”

Before you, then, are 44 photographs of Arsenal. In the course of putting this show together I have developed a new interest: photography of our industrial heritage. It is a great pleasure to share these photographs, and I hope that they are as meaningful to you as they have become to me.

Acknowledgments:
Porto Montenegro &
Cultural Centre Tivat

The aim was to illustrate sacral architecture of three principal religions in Montenegro: Orthodox, Catholic & Muslim. For this purpose, I have selected 23 big format photos (1×1.5 m), which are my personal favorite photos of sacral architecture of Montenegro. Here you can see them all. Last photo in the gallery contains front page and the link to the catalogue of the exhibition.

Acknowledgments:
His Excellency Antun Sbutega, Ambassador of the Montenegro at the Holy See
Embassy of Montenegro at the Holy See
Provincia di Roma
Altrevie, Associazione culturale, Roma
Associacione Altri Mondi, Roma

Special Acknowledgments:
I am especially grateful to Muslim Community of Montenegro, especially to Committee for the Restoration of Husein Pasha Mosque, Roman Catholic Bishopric of Kotor and to the Orthodox Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral for their encuragment in organisation of this exhibition.

Quotation from the catalogue text:
“Grazie alla sua raffinata sensibilità artistica, alla sua vasta cultura e soprattutto alla sua spiritualità, l’autore di questa mostra, il professore Stevan Kordic ha colto, non solo il lato estetico e culturale dei santuari e delle opere d’arte nel Montenegro, ma anche la loro dimensione fondamentale, quella trascendente, sacra.”
Antun Sbutega

After their deaths, Constantine's daughters Constantina and Helena were buried here. Since Consantina was venerated as saint, the mausoleum was consecrated as a church in 1254 by Pope Alexander IV.

Santa Costanza's exterior survives today in its original condition except for the loss of its outer ambulatory. What remains of the interior of the building is ornately decorated with marble and tesserae mosaics which hint at a rich patronage of both pagan and early Christian provenance. The twelve pairs of columns which encircle the central chamber are of fine green and red marble, and are colour coordinated to the points of the cross. The ambulatory ceiling is vaulted, and decorated with mosaics which recall classical themes of Bacchic myth and early Christian beliefs. These same mosaics, like much of Santa Costanza have also been interpreted as discussing notions of the after-life.

Acknowledgments: Nada & Anton Sbutega

Many historians and archaeologists believe that the original structure of the church can be attributed to Michael VII Ducas (1071-1078), others put its foundation in the Comnenian period.

A parekklesion (a side chapel) was added to the south side of the church in the early palaiologan period, and dedicated to Christ the Logos. The small shrine was erected by Martha Glabas in memory of her late husband, Michael Tarchaniotes Glabas, short after the year 1310.

After the fall of Constantinople, the seat of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate was in Pammakarsitos Monastery from 1456 until 1587. Five years later, the Ottoman Sultan Murad III converted the church into a mosque and renamed it in honor of his Fetih (Conquest) of Georgia and Azerbaijan, hence the name Fethiye Camii.

Parekklesion represents one of the most beatiful building of the late byzantine period in Constantinople. It has the typical cross-in-square plan with five domes, but the building is much more developed in height than the usual.

Altough the inner colored marble revetment largely disappeared, the shrine still contains the restored remains of a number of mosaic panels, which, while not as varied and well-preserved as those of the Chora Church, serve as another resource for understanding late Byzantine art.

The Chapter of Cathedral made decision in 13th century to replace the Old Cathedral with a cathedral in French High Gothic style. Archbishop Konrad von Hochstanden lay foundation stone of the new building on August, 15th, 1248. The immediate model was Cathedral of Amiens, but the Cathedral architect Master Mason Gerhard, oriented himself in the details on the newly completed Sainte Chapelle in Paris. From the beginning of the construction to the 1560 following part of the Cathedral has been constructed: the choir-apse, the high altar, the southern tower up to a height of 56m, the northern aisles and the nave up to a height of 13m with a provisional ceiling. For centuries the Cathedral remained unfinished, until in 1823 a new workshop for repairs was founded. From 1842 on two transept façades and the upper parts of the nave and transepts were erected. The half of costs were financed by the Prussian government and the other half was provided by the Friends of the Cathedral Society founded in 1842 and still active. In 1863 the interior of the Cathedral was completed. On October 15th, 1880, the last stone in the southern tower was put in place. Five nave Cathedral of Köln with its 157.38m height towers is a pinnacle of High Gothic architecture.

Acknowledgments: Agnès Rausch

The original church was completely destructed by the earthquake of 1979. Since that time seamen and fishermen of Grbalj wanted to reconstruct church of St. Nicholas. On the 22nd of May 2002 the Committee for the Reconstruction of St. Nicholas Church has been established. Mr. Ivo Bajković has been elected as the President of Commettee and Mr. Ivo Lazarević has been elected as secretary general of Committee. Architectural project of the new church has been made by Mr. Borislav Boro Vukšić, Mrs. Biljana Gligorić and Mrs. Tatijana Rajić. The reconstructed church is 1.5 m wide, 2.5 m long (with apse) and 3.5 m height with the belfry and the cross on top of it. Together with concrete platform it has 13 tons of weight. Concrete platform was projected by Mr. Vasko Momcilović and static calculation of the church was done by Mr. Đorde Bijelić. The ston for the church has been provided by 'Geoservis' D. D. O. from Danilovgrad. Execution of the whole work has been done by the 'Franović' D. D. O. Company from Kotor. It was more convenient to construct the church into the facilities of Franović Company and then to transport it to the island. Transport was done by the help of Mr. Vojo Bajković (crane), Mr. Stanko Magud (trucks), Army of Serbia and Montenegro (floating crane) and Malovići Company (tug). I did have opportunity to photograph all these extraordinary events including the setting of the church on 27th September 2003. Here you can see what I have seen.

Acknowledgments: Borislav Boro Vukšić

Destroyed by fire, it was replaced by a new cathedral. Nearly four centuries passed between starting of the foundations in 1176 to the competition of the spire in 1439. Its height made Strasbourg's Notre Dame the highest building in Christendom until 19th century, when it was overtaken by the towers in Ulm and Cologne. Part of the crypt and the apse are vestiges of the earlier basilica built by Werhner in Romanesque style. In around 1225, the arrival of a team from Chartres revolutionized the course of construction. A master builder, whose name is unknown, introduced the local craftsmen to the splendors of Gothic architecture, which had up to then been ignored. The west side was started towards 1270. Strasbourg Minster represents a pinnacle of development in Gothic architecture, with its light, open buttress system above the aisles of the nave, and the two lower floors of the western facade with their filigree layered tracery covering the facade.

Acknowledgments: Europa Nostra

Traditional village architecture in 20 old villages and five hamlets was destroyed during the 1979 earthquake. The villages are mostly deserted and some have been devastated by the reconstruction. In Grbalj there are 62 churches and sites of former churches and still active Podlastva monastery, assembly place of the inhabitants of Grbalj through centuries. They were also destroyed in the 1979 earthquake. (Text by Borislav Boro Vukšić).

Acknowledgment: Borislav Boro Vukšić
