SANTA MARIA IN COSMEDIN
Santa Maria in Cosmedin is three nave basilica from 8th century. It was constructed on the place where once stood the Temple of Hercules. Interior is decorated with beautiful cosmatesque floor, completely preserved choir, septum, ambo and other elements of early Christian church inventory. Ciborium - canopy is in the Gothic style. Frescos in the apse and elsewhere in the church are form 8th to 12th century.
Greek monks escaping iconoclastic persecutions decorated the church around 782, when pope Adrian I promoted its reconstruction; the church was built with three naves and a portico. Because of its beauty, the church received the adjective cosmedin (from Greek kosmidion), beautiful.
